What is manipulative behavior?
Manipulation is an emotionally unhealthy psychological strategy used by people who are incapable of asking for what they want and need in a direct way, and it involves three primary factors: guilt, fear, and obligation.
Developed by Emmons & Plomin, Structured Clinical Interviews (SCI) is the gold standard in studying human behavior. Each interview is made up of seven different segments – each designed to address the research question. In addition to seven different interviews, there are two main surveys – the Subscriber Satisfaction Survey (SSS) and the Seminar Panel (SP) Survey – that have been in place since the beginning of the study. With these in place, the average person would have questions answered about their life and personality on an eight times return over the course of their years of study. The SCI is an interview that can be described as an interrogation.
Different types of manipulative behavior
Fatigue inducement is pretty easy to spot when you know the tactic, but many other dark psychological and manipulation tactics are not as easily detected. There are dozens of ways people use manipulation, unethical persuasion, and game-playing tactics to get what they want. It would take an entire book to explain all the tactics, but I will highlight some of the most common ones.
Love Flooding– When you’re being flooded with love, it can be difficult to distinguish what is genuine. When you’re feeling like a victim of love flooding, try to take a step back and remember that the best way to handle it is by not giving in.
Love Denial– Love denial is a form of emotional abuse in which those who love you withdraw their love, attention, and affection in order to get the desired response. This is a very dangerous tactic when parents use it with their children.
Fatigue Inducement – Have you ever been to a car dealership and felt exhausted, but couldn’t figure out why? Fatigue Inducement is a negotiation tactic that can make you feel like you’re giving up.
Subliminal Influence– Subliminal Influence is a tactic that uses visual and auditory stimuli to seed familiarity with a product, service, action, or belief. Subliminal messages appeal to the visual and auditory processing parts of our brains.
Choice Restriction- Choice Restriction is used when someone is trying to get you to make a decision in compliance with their desires. Many sales professionals are pro applying this tactic in order to increase their volume of sales.
Reverse Psychology– Reverse Psychology is a technique involving the advocacy of a belief or behavior that is opposite to the one desired, with the expectation that this approach will encourage the subject of the persuasion.
Mind Games– Mind games are a series of psychological techniques that create a struggle between two people for psychological superiority and one-upmanship. They often employ passive-aggressive behavior to provoke the opponent.
